As a collective, communal experience is always at the forefront of what we create. We don’t have a kit of parts or style guides but we’ve got a whole lot of feel. It all started with Jenné asking me to create a logo with body. As time went on, the more events we made, and platforms we developed, our own unique identity emerged and spoke for itself. A BALTI GURLS event or poster is always recognizable. Much of the work below is done in collaboration with my design sis Suldano Abdiruhman.
BG’s hand lettered logo was inspired by 70’s typography as the atomsphere of many of our events were inspired by 70’s black style and feminist literature.
atom is a concept magazine.
Designed based on overlays and intersections, Atom provides sociopolitical information and current events around issues regarding, race, immigration, gender & sexuality, and class. This magazine’s intention is to provide personal accounts for collaborators and readers who would like a safe platform to share their stories, ideas, and fantasies. Atom’s mission is to connect those who may feel isolated in their experiences, provide informative and fun reading for QTPOC folks, and invite people to read up on the latest issues for a multitude of communities.

Founded by Shydeia Caldwell in May 2015, it began as a meetup for women of color residing in New York City. Since then, BGM events have expanded throughout the United States. BGM is simultaneously an arts space, a hub for dialogue, a multimedia realm and center for solidarity and self care.
